I started to grow a beard in December 2015 when my mum was diagnosed first with brain cancer and then lung cancer. I was traveling 2.5 hours every opportunity I could to be with her and the beard journey began. A few weeks before she died she said she liked my beard (it was about 1.5" at this point) so when she died in the March I decided to grow it to see what it would become. I have now been growing my beard for almost three years. |

They were true men, not macho stereotypical men, but the kind that always did the right thing and were always willing to help anyone. They always had time for us children no matter what they were doing. I kept growing it because children love my beard. My dad is like the baby whisperer. Children are just attracted to him, even though he is a big burly man. I inherited that trait as well. |

However, the longer it grows the more it becomes a part of me in the sense of how people look at me and react to me. I was a very shy kid. I never wanted people to look at me.
